Don Moustache hotel: budget-friendly charm and design

Don moustache room

The Don Moustache hotel is a family affair, one which combines accommodation, music and clothing under a single label: the moustache.

The adventure began in Munich, where the Don Moustache team started out creating bags, T-shirts and music. The same desire to share and attention to detail went into the creation of the Don Moustache youth hostel in Barcelona, which is ideally situated just off Plaça Catalunya.

A hostel full of charm

The careful décor and quirky details immediately make visitors feel right at home. The Don Moustache is not simply a money-making venture, and staff will take the time to welcome you and to offer advice.

Rooms at the Don Moustache

Check-in is from 2pm, but if your room is ready before then, you’ll be given access. Check-out is by 11am.

The whole building is heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer. Wifi is available everywhere except in the largest dormitory: this is the result of a conscious decision by the owners, intended to encourage conversation and interaction within the shared areas of the building.

The Don Moustache concept is based around friendliness, sharing and communication.

Dormitories

The dorms at the Don Moustache are bright, impeccably clean and well-equipped.

There are two large dormitories, each with 8 beds and individual lockers (if you haven’t brought your own padlock, you can borrow one from reception against a refundable deposit of €10).

The biggest dorm sleeps 16, but clever sliding panels can be used to create smaller, more intimate spaces. There are three shared bathrooms, which are immaculate.

Private room

If it’s peace and quiet you’re after, a private room is also available. This room sleeps up to three people and comes equipped with its own bathroom.

Spacious and bright, the private room is a good option if you’re looking for something quieter and more private, but it’s not necessarily much cheaper than a room in a “normal” hotel.

Common areas

The kitchen is a little on the small side, but it’s very well equipped, and, more to the point, opens onto the living area, with a sofa, table, TV and computer, which anyone is free to use. People don’t tend to eat alone here: groups form, and each evening, people will make something which is typical in their own country to share with others. Might be worth looking up a few recipes before you go…

Breakfast is included in the price, and coffee, tea and a few small snacks are always available free of charge.

For groups, breakfast can be booked in advance for a few euros per head.

Added extras at the Don Moustache

The manager, Isabel, has a cousin named Javier who is, essentially, the Don Moustache’s added extra in his own right. When he has time, he offers tours of the non-tourist side of Barcelona, day or night, in Spanish or in English, and completely free of charge.
