Zuckerhaus: sweet treats in the land of Hansel and Gretel
Once upon a time, there was a pleasant, shady street. On that pleasant, shady street, was a shop with a pretty turquoise façade, completely different to its neighbours. On that façade was marked “peluqueria” – hairdressers. But in that hairdressers, there were no scissors, no shampoo, and no cut hair.
Once you step over the threshold, the hairdresser’s disappears as if by magic, and in its place is Zuckerhouse (sugar house, in German), a truly bewitching little cake shop…

In the shop, there’s a sugar house worthy of Hansel and Gretel themselves, complete with gingerbread people, and a range of crocheted cake slices. There are even little teacups and porcelain reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland.
A very, very small Zuckerhaus…
The only problem with Zuckerhaus is its size: the place is truly tiny. We were only able to stop for long enough to buy a piece of cake and enjoy a few seconds of daydreaming in this fairytale environment.
Homemade cakes
A touch of classic patisserie…
The queen of the Zuckerhaus kingdom is, clearly, Manuela, the creator of these marvellous cakes. Decked out in a traditional fabric head-dress, she offers a range of classics including chocolate cake, muffins and cheesecake – but that’s not all!
…and a whole host of original creations
Early in the morning, whilst the streets are still abandoned and as the sun is just starting to rise, Manuela works her magic in the kitchen, dreaming up unusual but delicious recipes which change in accordance with the seasons and with her mood.
We tried the apple and courgette cake, intrigued by the unusual combination of ingredients – and we loved it! The flavours are perfectly balanced, the texture light as a feather, and the taste – well, you’ll just have to try it yourself. Hands down, it’s a winner.
