Barcelona: geography, language and society<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\nBarcelona is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia in north-eastern Spain, south of the Pyrenees and on the Mediterranean coast.<\/p>\n

\"\"Covering a surface area of 101 km², Barcelona is almost the same size as Paris, but is much less densely populated, with “only” 1.6 million inhabitants.<\/p>\n

In Barcelona, the regional language, Catalan, is spoken alongside Castillian (“conventional” Spanish). The city is a modern, cosmopolitan, international hub, so you’ll hear plenty of other languages being spoken, too – and you shouldn’t have too much trouble making yourself understod!\n<\/p>\n

Origins<\/h3>\n

\nSome time during the 1st Century BC, the Romans established a colony by the name of Barcino on the site of what is now Barcelona. Remains of the walls constructed to protect the inhabitants during this period can still be seen in the old town. Later, the city was conquered by the Visigoths, then by the Arabs in 715.<\/p>\n
