During high season, though, things can get very busy, very quickly &#8211; not necessarily the ideal setting for relaxation and&nbsp;<em>farniente<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, there are plenty more options outside the city! For a calm, quiet dip, head outside Barcelona, and in less than an hour, you can be somewhere much, much more peaceful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter background-curly-sprite wp-image-5083 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/chapeau-lunettes-post-.png\" alt=\"drawing hat and shades\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<h2>Beaches around Barcelona: our selection<\/h2>\n<h3>1- Badalona &#8211; the closest one<\/h3>\n<p>\nBadalona beach is quite distinct from those you&#8217;ll find in Barcelona itself, despite being just down the road. There&#8217;s a calmer, more local vibe, and the water is noticeably cleaner.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"is-style-checklist\">\n<li>Our <strong>first photo<\/strong> was&nbsp; taken at<strong> Badalona<\/strong>! If you, too, fancy setting up camp under a shady tree, head out of the station and toward the right hand side of the beach (toward Barcelona, when you&#8217;re facing the sea).<\/li>\n<li>Hungry? Take a stroll down the Passeig de la Rambla, a charming avenue lined with palm trees which is home to a whole host of bars serving tapas on the terrace.<\/li>\n<li>For sporty types, there are volleyball courts set up on the sand.<\/li>\n<li>Showers are also available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Getting there:<\/strong> Take the R1 toward Ma&ccedil;anet-Massanes&nbsp;or the metro (L2) to Badalona-Pompeu Fabra<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price (one way):<\/strong> &euro;2.20 (or &euro;1 if you have a 1-zone T10 ticket)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Journey time:<\/strong> 20-25 minutes from Pla&ccedil;a Catalunya by train (R2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2- Montgat Nord &#8211; the quietest one<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8859 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plages-autour-de-barcelone-montgat-pano.png\" alt=\"beaches around Barcelona Montgat\" width=\"628\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plages-autour-de-barcelone-montgat-pano.png 628w, https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plages-autour-de-barcelone-montgat-pano-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two stations down the line from Badalona, the beach at Montgat Nord is quieter still. Enjoy views of the F&ograve;rum park and&nbsp; <a href=\"\/hotel-w-bar-restaurant-view-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H&ocirc;tel W<\/a> from the comfort of your towel. Not bad!<\/p>\n<ul class=\"is-style-checklist\">\n<li>As at Badalona, there are volleyball pitches and free showers available.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re feeling peckish, head for one of the <em>chiringuitos<\/em> (beach bars) or the tapas bar near the station.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s less on offer by way of refreshments than at Badalona, so if you&#8217;re planning on spending the say, we recommend packing a picnic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Getting there: <\/strong>Take the R1 to Ma&ccedil;anet-Massanes. Follow the railway line and take the underpasses to get to the beach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price (one way):<\/strong> &euro;2.20 (or T10 1 zone)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Journey time:<\/strong> 30-35 minutes from Pla&ccedil;a Catalunya<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3- Sitges &#8211; the most varied one<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8861 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-sitges-pano.png\" alt=\"beaches around Barcelona: Sitges\" width=\"628\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-sitges-pano.png 628w, https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-sitges-pano-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sitges is a pretty town on the Catalan coast, which features both a beach and a picturesque town centre, with winding streels full of little shops and typical bars. It&#8217;s tucked away in a quiet cove, with pretty wooden huts which add to the charm of the place.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"is-style-checklist\">\n<li>&nbsp;The beach is very clean, as is the water.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s only one <em>chiringuito<\/em>, but it offers excellent value for money. We were unable to resist the <em>patatas bravas<\/em>, which come with our seal of approval!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"is-style-badlist\">\n<li>Get there early &#8211; the beach is small and can fill up quickly. If you&#8217;re not a morning person, then head for a bigger beach with more room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Getting there: <\/strong>Take the southbound R2 towards Vilanova i la Geltru.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price (one way):<\/strong> &euro;3<\/li>\n<li><strong>Journey time: <\/strong>40 minutes from Passeig de Gr&agrave;cia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>5- Castelldefels &#8211; the biggest one<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8951\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-casteldefels-post-1.jpg\" alt=\"castelldefels beach\" width=\"628\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-casteldefels-post-1.jpg 628w, https:\/\/barcelona-top-travel-tips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/07\/plage-casteldefels-post-1-300x96.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Half-way between Sitges and Barcelona is Castelldefels. Whilst it lacks the charm of Garraf, Castelldefels is a great choice because, put simply, it&#8217;s huge!<\/p>\n<ul class=\"is-style-checklist\">\n<li>You&#8217;re not going to struggle to find a space here &#8211; there&#8217;s plenty of room for everyone!<\/li>\n<li>There are also lots of <em>chiringuitos<\/em> and a whole host of bars, making this beach almost as lively as the one at Sitges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Getting there: <\/strong>Take the southbound R2 towards Vilanova i la Geltru. Get off at <strong>Castelldefels Platja <\/strong> (the main station at Castelldefels is a fair way from the beach).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price (one way):<\/strong> &euro;2.20 (or T10 1 zone)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Journey time: <\/strong>35 minutes from Passeig de Gr&agrave;cia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter background-curly-sprite wp-image-5339 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/07\/parasol-post-.png\" alt=\"parasol\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<h2>Before you go&#8230;<\/h2>\n<h3>Trains, times and stations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renfe.com\/EN\/viajeros\/cercanias\/barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here for times and route plans for the R1<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renfe.com\/EN\/viajeros\/cercanias\/barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here for times and route plans for the R2<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"is-style-checklist\">\n<li>The trains have air conditioning, making the journey particularly pleasant when it&#8217;s hot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"is-style-badlist\">\n<li><strong>Note: <\/strong>If you&#8217;re going to Garraf or Castelldefels, make sure your train stops at the station you want &#8211; not all of them do! Check the station list before you get on.<\/li>\n<li>There are no&nbsp;<strong>station announcements<\/strong> on the train, so it&#8217;s up to you to pay attention!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pick your return time <\/strong>carefully: trains back to Barcelona can get very, very busy, especially between around 6 and 8.30pm.
