La Vinya del Senyor: a pleasant wine bar opposite the Santa María del Mar basilica
La Vinya del Senyor is a wine bar located just opposite the majestic Santa María del Mar basilica, and you will be pleased to know it has tables outside.
La Vinya del Senyor’s amazing location
Set in a very touristic area, la Vinya del Senyor is a really nice place to try some Catalan and Spanish wines in a magnificent setting.
La Vinya del Senyor, a traditional and welcoming bar
What strikes you at first is the warm welcome of the staff; although most of the servers only speak Catalan or Spanish, they manage to to make themselves understood and really want to help you choose the best wine.
There is no up-selling here; having ordered a bottle that was out of stock, my server pointed me towards a bottle that was similar but cheaper than my original choice. A nice detail!
The wine selection at la Vinya del Senyor
The kingdom of wine
Wine is present everywhere in the bar and innumerable bottles cover the walls.
The menu offers a wide range of Catalan and Spanish wines. To help you choose, read the paragraph on Catalan wines in our article Catalan drinks: say cheers Barcelona style.
And the price?
The prices vary a lot from one wine to another but you can manage to pay between 2 and 6 euros per glass. Of course it is usually cheaper in the end to order a whole bottle. Bottles start at 15 euros.
La Vinya del Senyor also has a tapas menu but they are a little expensive so we don’t particularly recommend them. It depends on your budget!
The place: lively or intimate
The busy terrace
La Vinya del Senyor is really a very small bar and most of the tables are on the terrace, so it’s best to come here when the weather forecast is good!
The tables are right opposite the Santa María del Mar basilica, so the place has a really exceptional view. But that also means that the square is very busy. Between tourists and street artists, there’s a lot going on!
The minuscule bar for private moments
If you’re looking for quiet, take the spiral staircase to the tiny lounge on the first floor where you’ll find two little tables with a clear view of the basilica.
It is also possible to sit at the bar, but there is limited space so get there early!
And if you love wine, don’t forget to take a look around Vila Viniteca, the home of wine and cheese in Barcelona.
Cheers!
