Barcelona isn’t only a party city, it’s also a major location for sporting events. A whole range of competitions are organised throughout the year. Read on for an overview of what’s on offer in Barcelona.

Marathon and Half-marathon

The Marathon

is an iconic run, covering just over 26.2 miles.

If you don’t know why the marathon is the length it is, let us enlighten you! Legend says that Philippidès, a Greek messenger, ran from the city of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Bursting into the assembly, the messenger delivered the news, before collapsing and dying. The distance between the two cities was 26.219 miles, or around 42 km.

More and more amateur runners are taking the marathon challenge. If you don’t feel up to going the full distance, there’s also the half-marathon option, just over 13 miles or 21.097km.
